Almond field days held in July this year were well at- tended by almond growers and managers. The experience in each region was quite different, and in some cases we were fortunate enough to visit orchards with specific challenges (such as salinity) which provided a great opportunity to learn more about managing al- monds under difficult situations. “Riverland Growers held a field day visiting Century Orchards and Craig Spilsbury’s orchard on the 20 th of July. Fifty growers turned out to hear Professor Assaf talk on the importance of optimisation. Professor talked on a myriad of subjects including fertilisation, nutrition, and pruning. We had a great day which was well attended by growers. Biosecurity Levy - Strong support for the proposed Biosecurity (EPPE) Levy was demonstrated in a formal ballot of ABA members and levy payers. The Almond Board is now in the process of applying for establishment of this levy, initially set to zero, on behalf of the Australian Almond Industry. Members and levy payers were presented with an overview of ABA activities and strategic priorities at the regional meetings held in Adelaide, Riverland & Sunraysia on 8th and 9th June 2006. Australian Almond Industry Strategic Plan 2006-2011 The draft strategic plan, outlining key strategic objectives targeted for achievement over the next five years, for the Australian Almond Industry, was well received by those present. The plan is now being finalised and will soon be available via the ABA website.
Almond Pest & Disease Guide 2006
Development of the industry’s first official pest & disease guide has been facilitated by Horticulture Australia Limited (HAL) in partnership with the ABA, as part of the almond industry R&D program. This program is funded by the almond levy and matched by the Australian Government. The Guide provides information on almond pests and diseases that can be managed and monitored by orchard managers. Importantly, the Guide will be treated as a living document undergoing constant revision to ensure the inclusion of accurate and up-to-date information. The Guide will gradually be developed and refined to become an Integrated Pest and Disease Management (IPM) manual. It is stressed that between reprints it is the responsibility of growers to access and implement the latest information and recommendations by referring to the sources included in the Guide. Also note information relating to current legal responsi- bilities for use of chemicals, as outlined in the Guide.
Also, please carefully note the permit registration details (some expired) that are outlined in the Guide. It is expected that expired permits will move to full registration once the Australian Pesticides & Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) have reviewed the trial data submitted by the ABA. Updated information can be found at the APVMA website www.apvma.gov.au by clicking either SEARCH PUBCRIS for a product or SEARCH for a permit on the left hand menu. The ABA will also keep you updated as to the situation regarding permits and registration changes. This chairman's note firstly confirms that I am standing down after almost 3 years in the chair, and John Bird from Select Harvests has accepted the nomination for chairman. We have used this change to better spread the Executive's workload. Brenton Woolston has taken the role of ANIC Board Member on ABA's behalf and will assume role of ANIC President early next year.
We would also propose that the ABA chair rotate regularly, and are confident that with the organisation now growing and maturing, we are
well resourced to smoothly support the industry needs. Between bee industry matters, toxic waste dump forums, senate inquiries in to labour, community needs issues at Robinvale, there are now many and interesting matters in which an expanding almond industry are involved and recognised.

Almond Management Courses
Excellent feedback has been received from more than 70 almond growers and managers who attended the Almond Management Courses held in May this year. The topic of technology transfer is currently under review, with an objective of ensuring growers have good access to information in future.

Resignations & Appointments
It is with regret that we notify members of Corinna Steeb’s resignation from the ABA Executive Committee following her resignation from Nut Producers Australia. Accordingly, the marketing position held by Corinna on the ABA Executive Committee has been declared vacant as part of the annual election process (see below). Corinna has made valuable contribution to the ABA over the past two years through her input to the Executive Committee, Marketing Subcommittee, Remuneration Committee and the Almond IAC. Our best wishes are extended to Corinna for the future.
Further changes affecting the ABA have taken place within Horticulture Australia Limited (HAL), due to the resignation of John Oakeshott, who has served in the role of Industry Services Manager for the almond industry and has worked closely with the ABA during this time. Sincere thanks to John for the dedication he has shown in working towards the best outcome for our industry. Following John’s resignation, a restructure within HAL has taken place creating an additional position in order to better spread workload across HAL Industry Services. As a result of this restructure, Ross Skinner has been appointed as the new almond Industry Services Manager.

Almond Planting Survey - 2006 Update
Last year the ABA commenced collection of Australian almond data by conducting a national planting survey of almond growers. Excellent grower participation in excess of 90%, enabled the ABA to release a report summarising the survey data collected. This “2005 Australian Almond Plantings Report” is available from the ABA website or via our office. To ensure that information remains up-to-date and accurately reflects any new plantings or removals, we plans to conduct annual survey updates. It is important to note that all data collected is strictly confidential, with only consolidated information released.
Your assistance in this process is vital to ensure access to accurate and up-to-date information that is necessary for a range of activities including planning, forecasting and representing industry.
Survey updates for 2006 have been posted to all known Australian almond growers and should be returned to ABA office by Friday, 29th September.
Executive Committee Nominations Closing Date - 6 October 2006
In accordance with the ABA’s Executive rotation, process, nominations are being sought for the following four (4) Executive Committee positions: • Two (2) marketing representatives • One (1) Riverland grower representative • One (1) Sunraysia grower representative Any member involved in the marketing of almonds is eligible to nominate for a marketing
The ABA Executive meets a minimum of four times per year, with an expectation that committee members will take on an additional role in one or more subcommittee. Almond budwood orders for 2006/07 are due by Friday, 29th September 2006. Order forms are available from the ABA website or by contacting the ABA office. Similar to last year a non-refundable deposit of 10 cents per bud is required to secure orders. This deposit is non- refundable, except in the event of supply not being available. Charges will be invoiced by the ABA at a rate of 40 cents (plus GST) per bud, less applicable credit for deposits.

Almond Marketing Program
Exciting progress is taking place in our almond marketing program, with the recent appointment of PR company - JMM Communications who are now developing a twelve month marketing strategy to conduct communications activities that complement our existing advertising and sponsorship program. Media relations activities will form the basis of their activities, aligning with existing events, promotions, advertising, sponsor- ships and ambassadors. The ABA aims to build on the proposition ‘a handful of almonds everyday’. In order to reinforce this message, Australian netballer, Bianca Chatfield has been appointed as the ABA’s first ambassador.
In addition to this, JMM will develop and maintain the content of the consumer section of our website to ensure it reflects current marketing program activities. JMM will work closely with the ABA to tailor a twelve month calendar of potential opportunities which will piggyback with existing activities and promotional materials for maximum impact. Dinner Speaker: Tom O’Toole Tom O’Toole is the charismatic and inspirational ‘Baker’ from Beechworth. He has built his bakery into one of Australia’s greatest success stories. Horticulture Australia Council (HAC) by Kris Newton, HAC CEO
So, what does HAC actually do to advance the cause of horticulture? That depends on the issue. For some issues, the most appropriate (and desirable) approach is to act as a key influence-maker by participation in reviews, Steering Committees, national forums or consultation proc- esses, presentation of submissions, and the like. This approach fre- quently has the advantage of being able to ‘head off’ potential problems before they arise! This approach has worked well in cases dealing with some of our prior- ity issues this past year, such as HAC’s representation on the national Steering Committees for the Reviews of the Amenity Horticulture and Rural Production Training Packages, or the national forum on Quaran- tine; the joint HAC/HAL submission to the Senate Inquiry into Pacific Island labour; or HAC submissions on Country of Origin labelling on fresh produce, Managed Investment Schemes, Farm Managed Deposits, or on the role of the Produce and Grocery Industry Ombudsman. Because it is much more efficient to influence government policy in the early stages, rather than have to fight a ‘rear-guard action’, much of HAC’s work is therefore ‘behind the scenes’ and not necessarily immediately apparent; though we do try to keep Members informed of current issues and steps we are taking on each (eg via the Drip Feed email newsletter). Another type of action we are taking is proactive - developing a series of Policy Positions, accompanied by Fact Sheets, on key issues (eg Water, Trade, Food Labelling, Natural Resource Management). These are designed for use by HAC and its Members organisations – either to address a particular issue (eg unilateral imposition of water restrictions by local councils), or as a portfolio of agreed stances on critical issues for horticulture (eg visiting your local MP going into an election). The other major type of action is more public, and may take the form of campaigns in the media, and/or advocacy/lobbying work with relevant politicians. Examples of this work include the Horticulture Code of Conduct, the impact of climate change and Extreme Weather Events, or Country of Origin labelling, which are relevant to the vast majority of growers. Other campaigns involve individual industries which are hurting (eg following Cyclone Larry); or cases of individual industries suffering from (frequently unintended or unnecessary) negative effects of political decisions (such as the ‘resurrection’ of the Turf Industry levy to a satisfactory outcome, or the current issue of Security Sensitive Chemicals). Horticulture is the fastest growing agricultural industry in Australia with a gross value of production at farm-gate of $7 billion per annum. The industry is diverse, and includes vegetables, nuts, nursery and garden, fruit, turf, cut flowers and extractive crops.
Horticulture Australia Council (HAC) is the peak industry body for horticulture. The Council’s 20 Member organisations are the peak grower associations for the various commodity groups, plus grower representative organisations, and represent over 95% of horticultural production, with new members joining steadily. The mission of HAC is to: 1. Strive for the advancement and prosperity of Australian horticulture by providing structure and resources to deal with issues of common interest; and Represent horticulture with a powerful and unified voice. Part of the difficulty Horticulture had in the past was that key decision - and influence-makers (politicians, media or Departmental officers, for example) were confronted by over 40 different industry ‘voices’! This was fracturing and diluting our message. It was clear that a single voice was needed to present a coherent and united stance on behalf of the industry – a case of “united we stand, divided we fall”. Most growers are well aware that Horticulture Australia Limited (HAL) is the industry-owned national research, development and marketing organisation for horticulture. HAL and HAC work cooperatively together for the advancement of horticulture, including joint projects (such as Horticulture for Tomorrow , or the Horticulture Industry Strategic Plan) or submissions, or HAC’s ‘observer’ status on HAL industry committees (such as the IMC or HMAC). While the outcomes of HAL research may form the basis of much of the data used in the political arena, HAL itself is not permitted to engage in ‘agri-political activity’ – that is the role of HAC. HAC Council Members are the CEOs and national Presidents/Chairs of the Member organisations. The Board is elected by the Council at the AGM, and the HAC Chair (presently Stuart Swaddling of NGIA) is elected by the Board. HAC’s funding comes from two sources: the main source is annual membership fees from Members of Council; and we currently receive important sponsorship from Prime Super. HAC receives no government funding, nor any funding through levy monies/HAL. The HAC Board has identified the following issues for the current period (though of course others do keep popping up!): ∗ the Horticulture Code of Conduct; ∗ food labelling; ∗ trade issues (eg Free Trade Agreements, market access, biosecurity); ∗ labour and skills (including harvest trails, DIMIA visa arrangements, Training Package reviews); ∗ exotic disease/pest management; ∗ management of land tenure in an environment of urban encroachment (‘Right to Farm’); ∗ Natural Resource Management (sustainable water management); ∗ market dominance of supermarket chains. 2.

Ingredients (Serves 8) 300ml thickened Cream, whipped to soft peaks 170ml can Passion fruit pulp ALMOND CRUST 125g pkt flaked almonds 60g butter Half 250g packet plain chocolate or sweet biscuits

CHEESECAKE FILLING 5 level teaspoons gelatine 3 tablespoons lemon juice 4 tablespoons fresh orange juice 250g Smooth Ricotta 200ml (3/4 cup) low fat yoghurt 2 x 60g egg whites 3 tablespoons caster sugar 1/2 cup flaked almonds 425g can sliced mango, drained Place Almonds in food processor, coarsely blend, set aside. Add biscuits, blend to medium crumb. Melt butter in small saucepan. Reserve 1/2 cup almonds for filling, add remainder to pan, stir constantly until starting to brown. Stir in biscuit crumbs. Press into base of 22cm spring form pan. Chill. Combine ricotta and yoghurt together. Beat egg whites to soft peaks. Gradually beat in sugar to make a firm meringue. Reserve 4 mango slices for decoration, chop remainder. Fold gelatine then reserved almonds, mango and meringue into ricotta mixture. Pour into pan. Chill until firm, about 6 hours. Fold passion fruit pulp into cream. Cut reserved mango slices in half. Cut cheesecake into wedges and decorate as illustrated. Soften gelatine in combined citrus juices in small pan. Dissolve over low heat, do not boil.
