More than 100 people attended the ABA’s Almond Industry Conference held early November 2005 in the Riverland. It was aimed to present a professional and comprehensive two-day program, incorporating a business day, field day and Industry Dinner. Member for Chaffey, Karlene Maywald MP officially
opened Day 2 proceedings with a breakfast session addressing the topic of water trading and future availability. Field trips to the Spilsbury’s properties and Amaroo Orchards generated great interest.
Guest speaker Dr Ross Walker, together with a generous donation of wine from Frank Condo of Swan Produce, ensured that the Australian Almond Industry Dinner was an extremely successful and enjoyable evening. .

Executive Officer Appointed…. Julie Haslett has recently been appointed as Executive Officer of the Almond Board of Australia. As many of you are aware, Julie was previously employed as the ABA’s Admin/Finance Manager. Her new role will see her continuing with many of her previous activities, while taking on increased responsibility and management of association activities .
New IAC Chairman After many years of service, Peter Freeman has retired as Chairman of the Almond Industry Advisory Committee (IAC). Peter’s valuable contribution in this role was formally acknowledged late last year at the Australian Almond Industry Dinner. Peter will continue as a member of the IAC. Dr Ben Robinson replaces Peter as the new IAC Chairman. Ben Robinson has been involved in horticultural and viticultural research and consulting since graduating B Ag SC (Hons) from Adelaide University in 1963. He gained a PhD in plant physiology from Cambridge University in 1967 and worked as a post-doctoral fellow at UCLA in 1970/71. He spent 20 years as a research scientist based at the Northfield Laboratories of the then South Australian Department of Agriculture working on aspects of horticultural mineral nutrition and soil management. It was in this role that he first did research work for the almond industry (a nitrogen fertiliser trial at Nildottie). He was a member of the research committee of the almond industry in the 1980s. Together with Doug Reuter he co-edited both editions of “Plant Analysis – A Manual” which brought together tissue analysis data for a wide range of horticultural and agronomic crops, with special reference to Australian conditions. He and Peter Scholefield established Scholefield Robinson Horticultural Services Pty Ltd (SRHS) in 1989. Work for the and almond growers was and still remains an important part of that business. Ben retired from SRHS and full time consulting at the end of 2004. He is maintaining his interest in horticulture and viticu coordinating role in the Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation’s Soil Water Initiative, and the Pistachi research committee. Budwood requirements for this year have been extraordinarily high. Orders were placed for around 2.4 million buds, representing intended plantings of around 9,000 hectares. This is around twice the size of the entire Industry in 1993; a remarkable change. The budwood is being allocated to nurseries to ensure as fair and equitable distribution as possible. In general, most orders are being satisfied and cooperation of the nurseries in making the most of the available budwood production has been appreciated and successful. The Monash site was completely overhauled this year, with a new drip irrigation system, controller and fertilizer program. The trees have responded very well and the growth and bud quality being by far the best yet achieved. This has helped the situation greatly. In the future, production of budwood will be boosted by the extra trees planted this year and further expansion of the site over the next two years. Over 906,000 buds have been sold to date, with spring budwood allocations being lifted before Christmas. Restrictions may apply to autumn budwood allocations. A major issue facing the industry is future availability of Nemaguard. Current levels of expansion in Australia and California are making it difficult to source this material from overseas.

Marketing Upate With Joseph Ebbage The major achievements of the marketing program during the first half of this financial year were: • Designing the logo and positioning statement for ‘Fresh Australian Almonds’. • Kick-starting our export marketing program by promot- ing our ‘Fresh Australian Almonds’ at the Anuga Food Fair in Cologne, Germany in October 2005. • Promoting Australian Almonds at two Good Food Shows: Sydney (July 05) and Brisbane (Nov 05). Melbourne’s Good Food Show will follow in June 2006. • Conducting consumer research to pre-test proposed advertising and promotional messages for the Australian domestic market. • The second half of the financial year will see a significant increase in the consumer advertising program to promote Australian almonds. • Advertising will be in the major food magazines: Australian Good Taste and SuperFood Ideas. • Timing of these ads will be April to June 2006. This period has been selected to maximise our consumer ‘cut-through’ via multiple ads in a short period of time and coincide with our new harvest in line with our key message: ‘’Fresh Australian Almonds”. Development of key relationships and sponsorships continues: • We will be exhibiting and promoting ‘Fresh Australian Almonds’ at the upcoming national Heart Foundation conference in Sydney in March 2006; • Firm sponsorship proposals will be made to both Sports Dieticians Australia and key netballers in January 2006.

ABA AGM Outcomes…. The 2005 AGM was held as part of the Almond Conference program in November 2005 at the Berri Resort Hotel. Financial Reports for 2004/05 were presented to members for approval.

The ABA constitution was amended to create Associate Membership for almond industry service providers and interested parties, including nurseries and beekeepers. The concept of a Biosecurity levy was introduced, following a detailed presentation by Andrew Heap, General Manager of the Australian Macadamia Society. Unanimous support was received for the proposed levy. Further consultation will now take place, in parallel with continued development of the Nut Industry’s Biosecurity Plan. The Executive committee was re-elected for 2005/06, with Stephen Lynch continuing in the role of Chairman for a further 12 months.

Strategic Planning A two-day workshop was attended by the IAC and the ABA Executive in late November to map out almond industry objectives for the next five years. This process was facilitated by Phil Herd from Corporate Plans. The plan will set direction for future activities including R&D and Marketing. The strategic plan will be presented for comment through a series of regional meetings.

Nut Consumption Booms In 2004/05 consumption of tree nuts in Australia grew by 29 per cent in dollar terms and 8 per cent in kilograms. Almonds were a star performer with consumption surging 65 per cent in dollars and 25 per cent in kilograms, and all this on back of impressive gains in 2003/04.

Most tree nuts enjoyed an increase in their dollar value this year reflecting the price increases. However several nuts showed a small decline in the number of kilograms sold in 2004/05 following the exceptional growth in 2003/04.
